School Wide Read Aloud

Every month Green Valley picks a book for its School Wide Read Aloud program (SWRA) - a unique non-curriculum initiative that was first introduced to Green Valley students, across all grades, about 10 years ago. It began under the leadership of Donna Bell (a former principal of Green Valley, who retired in 2008).

Each chosen book touches upon an important theme, to help meet and address the social and emotional needs of students. Through shared school-wide discussion, including the adoption of an associated "Word of the Month", students are able to develop and evolve their reading comprehension. In the classroom, SWRA books are further dissected and used as a springboard for oral and written exercises, art projects, and whole class discussions - where character development and the theme and author's message are examined more deeply.

HELP US KEEP SWRA ALIVE AT GREEN VALLEY!

As with any school initiative that falls outside of public funding, we rely on the financial support of the Green Valley community. Back when the program first started, it was originally funded by one family. They bought ALL the new books, EVERY year for EACH classroom!!! However, when their children aged-out of the school, we were forced to recycle these books. Now we are hoping, with your help, to add several new titles, as well as replace the books that are quite worn or missing.

Ultimately our goal is to raise $3,000 for SWRA this year. And we want to do this via the upcoming, and ever popular, SRVEF Run for Education - which gives money to those schools directly affiliated with its runners.

This year's Run for Education is taking place on October 16, 2016. You don't even need to be an actual runner to participate; you can sign up to be a "virtual runner." To register click on the Run for Education Logo on the right of this page.

Or, if you want to make a direct donation or get involved in Green Valley's School Wide Read Aloud program, please contact Michelle Bering or Sallie Dyer

Thank you for your support! SWRA truly is a phenomenal way to build community and expose our students to issues through the lens of children’s literature.

HOW MANY RUNNERS DOES GV HAVE SO FAR?

Our first goal is to get 15% of the school registered so that we can earn $500. However our ultimate goal is to raise $3,000 through the run for education. Remember you don't even need to run on the actual day. You can register as a "virtual runner"!

TIPS FOR READING AT HOME

1. Make it a Habit
  • Turn reading a ritual in your home. Leverage all kinds of books - chapter books, picture books etc.

2. Be a Model
  • Get into character. Use funny voices - bring out your inner actor.

3. Think like a reader
  • Talk about what you read. Ask questions. Show that you understand its message. Talk about the characters. Notice things.

And remember time is of the essence!!!

Fun fact
Did you know that the inspiration for the tile project in the courtyard with the “Bell” outline on the outside library wall was Donna Bell (see introduction on right). It was dedicated as part of the “Donna Bell Courtyard” that was named in her honor when she retired in 2008.
