STREET SMARTS TRAFFIC SAFETY ASSEMBLY

On Wednesday , October 28th, Green Valley students will attend an educational assembly sponsored by Street Smarts, a traffic safety education program serving San Ramon Valley. The assembly will teach your student important bicycle and pedestrian safety habits, such as how to safely cross the street, how to use a pedestrian countdown signal, and how to wear a bike helmet properly.

Traffic safety concepts that will be discussed with your child:
  • Crossing the street safely by identifying crosswalks and locations where it is safe to cross
  • Properly using a crosswalk by checking all directions for cars and making eye contact with drivers
  • Using pedestrian crossing signals to determine when it is safe to enter the crosswalk
  • Wearing a properly sized and fitted helmet
  • Maintaining visibility on the road by wearing brightly colored clothing or reflective gear, particularly at night

Other topics to be addressed:
  • Injury prevention, including the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet
  • The health and environmental benefits of walking or bicycling to school
  • Distractions, such as texting and talking on the phone

ABOUT STREET SMARTS

As part of a federal Safe Routes to School grant, Street Smarts is encouraging children to get active by walking and bicycling to school. The benefits of walking and bicycling to school include increased health and fitness, reduced air pollution, and less neighborhood traffic — not to mention the fresh air and friendships your child may encounter.

Street Smart would like to encourage you and your child together to get outside, get active, and get healthy! Most importantly, they hope that you will help your child by modeling safe behaviors, proper helmet wearing habits, and patience and care around street traffic.
